Starched White Aprons- Pink and White Cheeks

Written By: Mary  Dabrowski

September 7th, 1962.  Graduation exercises were held at the Southampton

Grade School, at the corner of Pine Street and Hampton Road.  We were

qualified to take State Boards in November, which we all passed, and received

our licenses as Registered Professional Nurses.

Many members of our class became lifelong friends and we still

keep in touch.  We all agree that ours was a unique experience at our nursing

school, and we often bring up memories of our years there.  The school closed

in 1967.  Most of the wonderful doctors we knew then are not there anymore,

but we, as student nurses, felt privileged to work with them and learn from

their lectures.

And the pink and white uniforms – oh yes – most of us kept at least one

packed away in our closets – they’re a good remembrance of bygone days,

Southampton Hospital, and Suffolk School of Nursing.
